Kakizawa is written in Japanese with two kanji: Kaki (柿), meaning “persimmon,” and Zawa (沢), meaning “mountain stream.” It was established as a village along the Nakasendō during the Edo period, situated between the Shiojiri Pass and Shiojiri-shuku, a post town.”
GOICHI WINE established its vineyard in 2011, and Sun Sun WINERY opened its winery in 2015, both in Kakizawa. Their vineyards are located on the southwestern slope of Mt. Takabotchi at an elevation of 800 to 900 meters.

Goichi Wine established its Kakizawa Vineyard in 2011 at an elevation of 800 meters, cultivating Merlot, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and other grape varieties. At the 2024 Japan Wine Competition, the Goichi Wine Kakizawa Merlot won a Gold Prize and was awarded the top honor in its category.
